Cabbage Thoran or Sadya Style Cabbage Thoran is a dry vegetable dish made with coconut, onion, ginger and green chilly. It is a part of the Onam / Kerala Sadya menu served along with other dishes. Sadya Style Cabbage Thoran recipe is a mild and very lightly spiced with the flavours of the cabbage dominating through. In some parts of Kerala, thoran is also referred to as upperi.

It is pretty easy to cook and it takes only 15 minutes of your time. Cabbage Thoran goes best with Rice and Fish curry, but if you are a vegetarian try with sambar. Instead of cabbage other veggies like beans, beetroot, carrot and spinach can be used.

    This is a very simple recipe. So do definitely give it a try and give your feedback. So let's get started.

    Step1

    Rinse the cabbage and slice the cabbage thinly. You can also shred or grate it. Finely chop the onions, ginger and green chilies.

    Step2

    Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add split urad dal, red chilies and curry leaves and saute for few seconds.

    Step3

    Add the chopped onion, ginger and green chilies. Saute for a minute. Add a pinch of turmeric and stir well.

    Step4

    Now add the cabbage into the pan.

    Mix it thoroughly and cook in low flame with the lid on for around 5 minutes or until the cabbage is just cooked.

    Step6

    Once the cabbage is cooked, add necessary salt and mix well.

    Step7

    Finally add fresh grated coconut and give it a quick stir and switch off the flame.

    Step8

    The crunchy and tasty Cabbage Thoran is ready to be served with hot rice and sambar.

    Conclusion

    Cabbage and coconut is an awesome combination so do not skip fresh grated coconut. Don't add water while cooking cabbage. It naturally has water in it, which releases while it gets cooked.
